The body on the beach made a fine dinner for the sand crabs, but Cuban police Lt. Enrique Cienfuegos still recognized the remains of his brother-in-law, Luis. Officially, Enrique isn’t allowed to investigate the murder of a family member, especially when his sister might be the prime suspect, and because Enrique’s estranged father is the Minister of the Interior. Enrique discovers that Luis’s frisky terrier is at least 32, as old as Enrique, and what could have been a simple murder takes a bizarre twist. A beautiful American biologist helps Enrique unravel clues that lead him to a government lab protected by the secret police, and nothing is what it seems to be. How much does Enrique’s estranged father know about the murder, and what could be so important that Castro’s scientists can murder with impunity to keep their secrets?
Lawyer-turned policeman, Enrique is the grandson of a famous revolutionary who died fighting beside Fidel, and his estranged father is the Minister of the Interior. As a young man, Enrique was swept up in his family history and the Revolution. After joining the Communist Party, Enrique discovered the darker side of El Triumpho, with its corruption and bureaucratic failures. He believes in the Cuban people but casts a jaded eye on government slogans and programs.

Lt. Enrique Cienfuegos is a likeable police detective who is forced by his agonizingly small police budget, limited forensic department, and the shadowy oversight of Cuba's suspicious bureaucratic entities into solving his brother-in-law's mysterious death the old-fashioned way - basic investigative work, tracking down clues, and gut instinct. A staunch believer in truth and family, Enrique will risk his own life to find out who killed his sister's brother and why.A good mystery, twists, interesting characters, and the Cuban setting kept the plot intriguing all the way to the climactic end. Will definitely look for another book from this debut author.

Dead on Cuban Time edition by Steven Moores Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was hard to put down! I loved that the book took place in Cuba--the mood and the mystery caught my full attention. Enrique Clenfuegos is someone I want to get to know better. I hope this isn't the only book but one of many in a series! More please...
You don't want to pass up Dead on Cuban Time! The author did an excellent job with character development. You will get to know the characters personally. I felt as though I made a visit to Cuba while reading Mr. Moores' captivating murder mystery.
Masterfully executed, this mystery thriller was unforgettable. Vivid, suspenseful, full of interesting characters and a panorama of life in Castro's Cuba. One of the most enjoyable reads I've had in years.
There's nothing quite as captivating as a well crafted mystery, and Dead on Cuban Time is all that and more. Engaging characters in an exotic setting, and an intriguing plot with twists and turns that keep you guessing the whole way through. A great read for anyone who likes a good mystery.
I enjoyed this book from the first scene. Who wouldn't, a pristine beach in beautiful Cuba, and a cute little dog with a mystifying series of numbers on his dog tag? The dog seems to be hovering near the dead man on the beach much like the heart-tugging novel, GREYFRIAR'S BOBBY. Moores' protagonist, Cuban police Lt. Enrique Cienfuegos, finds that the dog tag, along with a passel of other seemingly innocuous objects and facts, carry a sinister undercurrent that leads to a good twist at the end.
Stephen Moore's "Dead on Cuban Time" is a gem. The novel is brilliantly written, tightly plotted, and brings the reader into a strikingly unusual world. I was reminded of Martin Cruz Smith's novel "Gorky Park" when I read this. Like Arkady Renko, Enrique Cienfuegos is a detective operating in a shadowy, corrupt world, attempting to solve a murder with the overwhelming bureaucracy of a communist state standing in the way. He finds a body on the beach with a small terrier dog huddled next to the corpse and the action never stops until the breathtaking and unexpected finale. A must-read.
Steven Moores has created an intriguing character in police Enrique Cienfuegos, a police lieutenant who has made his life in a backwater job away from the attention of his powerful father, Cuba's Minister of Justice. But the balance Enrique has achieved tumbles into threat when the body of his brother-in-law is found on the beach, and a strange little dog is discovered nearby. The beautiful visiting professor who denies having known the murder victim shows up wherever Enrique finds another piece of information, and soon his father is asking questions about the investigation.
Moores deftly unwinds the compelling plot of this atmospheric gem. It's a page-turner.
