Young Sharur is the scion of a merchant family in the city o Gibil, loyal - he thinks - to his city's god, Engibil, and to that god's human deputies. But like his fellows in Gibil, Sharur is less interested in gods than in invention and trade. Then, on a routine trading expedition, he learns that the gods of the other cities, resentful of Engibil's relaxed attitude toward his people, are uniting to punish Gibil and squelch the growing power of human creativity, epitomised by the city-state's easygoing ways. Now only Sharur's wits can save the city from the aroused divinities...and he's going to need all the inventiveness he can muster.
Between the Rivers eBook Harry Turtledove
This is without doubt one of Turtledove's finest works. Year after year, re-read after reread...this book delivers fantastic insights as to man's separation from the gods. Just how dangerous and cunning a creature man is. And just how foolish the gods were to assume that they could control such a creature. How I wish that the author would write a sequel!Product details

Between the Rivers eBook Harry Turtledove Reviews
Between the Rivers is an underrated and under-appreciated novel. If people would open their minds and stop getting stuck on labels such as "fantasy", "real history", "Harry Turtledove", "gods", and "alt history", they would see a great story. I've never quite come across a book like Between the Rivers, and that's a good thing.
I love the detailed cultural references and customs. The mythology is great. The conflict between man and god is amazing. I probably would have spun it differently, perhaps having the gods be part of the bi-cameral brain a la Julian Jaynes, but Turtledove's take makes good fiction.
This book isn't for everyone, but it was for me.
Here is another superb Harry Turtledove offering, this time depicting a world set at the dawn of our own civilization's history. The Valley Between the Rivers (called today Mesopotamia or Iraq) is a world of city-states, each ruled by its own gods. Some of these gods take a deep personal interest in the people of their cities, while others are, to put it bluntly, lazy. Cities with lazy gods have to fend for themselves, with their peoples learning to solve their own problems and make their own innovations.
Turtledove is a trained historian, and the best of his books demonstrate his skills in research and analysis. Between The Rivers is indeed one of his best. I've reread and enjoyed it a number of times. My only regret is that Turtledove did not carry the story on with a few sequels!
I'm about 20% into the story and I really enjoy it. However the edition is full of typos, about one every other page or so, and that makes it very hard to read. This is the first time I've ever been unhappy with a edition , whoever scanned it and created the electronic edition didn't seem to both putting it through any kind of error scan. Annoying.
Love this book Harry Turtledove is a master at alternate universes
One of my favorite Turtledove stories, loved the book, delivered on time.
Harry Turtledove's work has certain characteristic strengths -- solid characterization, realistic motivations, good description, and fast-paced action. BETWEEN THE RIVERS adds a witty, intriguing look at the Bronze Age... in a world much like ancient Sumeria, but one where the gods are very real. Turtledove's extrapolations from this idea are solid, down-to-earth and a mixture of the hilarious and the horrific. For as one character says, to be a god you don't have to be very smart -- just very _strong_. His hero's adventures in a world where humans are still -- literally -- as insects beneath the feet of a very solidly realized pantheon are a treat for any reader of SF, fantasy or historical fiction. Highly recommended!
A significant departure for Turtledove, but not one he hasn't taken before. Here we deal with Mesopotamian city states who each have their own god - a god who takes a very active part in his cities affairs. I don't want to give any spoilers, but if you like Turtledove and you like fantasy fiction, you'll love this book. I read it 20-ish years ago and am buying it again. That good.
This is without doubt one of Turtledove's finest works. Year after year, re-read after reread...this book delivers fantastic insights as to man's separation from the gods. Just how dangerous and cunning a creature man is. And just how foolish the gods were to assume that they could control such a creature. How I wish that the author would write a sequel!
